In the Totem Sauvage studio: the creation process

Behind every work by Camille, there is a precise choreography. Here is how a unique piece is born.

1. Observation

Every work begins with an immersion. Camille collects photographs of horses in motion, anatomical studies, slow-motion video captures. The objective is not resemblance: it is the capture of an instant.

2. Preparing the panel

The Isorel panels are prepared with several layers of acrylic medium. This base must allow the knife to glide without catching, while retaining the material to create relief.

3. The palette

Always composed in advance. Camille works by chromatic families: one work, one palette. The colours are in generous quantities: acrylic with a palette knife consumes a great deal.

4. The gesture

This is the heart of the process. The knife replaces the brush. Every deposit of material is irreversible. The artist works standing, at large scale, engaging the whole body.

The strokes are rapid, decisive. No going back: only superimpositions. This is what gives the works their raw energy and unique character.

5. Drying

A palette knife work requires a great deal of drying time due to the thickness of the impastos. Some panels require three to four weeks before being fully stabilised.

6. The signature

When the work is ready, Camille signs it on the reverse, adds the mention 1/1, the date and the name. A certificate of authenticity is produced and accompanies the work during its shipment.
